Bachelor of Arts UZH in Comparative Linguistics

General description. Graduates have acquired basic specialized knowledge in all linguistic subfields and have mastered the analytical craft of linguistics. They have basic knowledge of linguistic theory and methods, especially with regard to comparative linguistic research. They have mastered digital data preparation and maintenance and know the basics of qualitative and quantitative data analysis. They are familiar with the practice of scientific work, presentation, and publication, have in-depth knowledge in their elective areas, and have built up an appropriate language portfolio. Career Prospects. Like many other university programs, the study of comparative linguistics does not lead to a specific profession. One of the most important later fields of activity is research, which can look very different depending on the profile. However, interest in language(s), enjoyment of analysis, and independent work are important components in any case.Outside the university, thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of the study program, it is possible to enter many fields, but especially one of the many professions related to language, text, and communication, such as editing, PR consulting, translation, or language teaching. Depending on one's interests, the knowledge of non-European languages acquired during the program, as well as the additional qualifications gained from the minor subjects, can also serve as a basis for working in other fields such as development cooperation or computational linguistics.

Bachelor of Arts in Italian language, literature and civilization

In a time of uncertainty and transience such as ours, approaching literature can constitute access to a different dimension of "inner duration" that restores to us a time and space endowed with meaning and inhabitable, a necessary condition for regaining true right of citizenship in the world. This is not a solipsistic activity: from its etymological root, literature in fact refers back to a plural dimension, confronts us with anotherness that immediately becomes dialogue. The strength of literature lies in its inexhaustible experimentation with hypotheses of reality, continuous and changing possible worlds that solicit our intelligence and sensitivity. That is why literature gives us, so to speak, a solitude full of exciting encounters, leads us from the closeness of our rooms to the most crowded crossroads, proving to be, for all intents and purposes, a decisiveexperience. The Bachelor's program in Italian Language, Literature and Civilization offered by the Institute of Italian Studies is based on a deep interweaving of knowledge between literature, linguistics, art and history. A heritage transmitted and shared for centuries throughout the world, which today offers itself to us not as a mere repository of memory, but as a promising viaticum for the future. Under the guidance of a faculty of international training and prestige, students will achieve a solid and articulated education on the basis of a main area of specialization (Italian Language and Literature) and a second area of study (History of Art, History, History of Philosophy or Communication Sciences), having then the possibility to continue their studies in Switzerland or continue them in Italy.

Master of Arts in Italian language, literature and civilization.

The Master's program proposed by the Institute of Italian Studies gathers around a strong idea of education that aspires not only to prepare students for a professional future, but also to enable the acquisition of a mature cultural identity, which is truly necessary today, at a time when we find ourselves exposed on the one hand to homologation and on the other to a sterile solipsism. The study of literature, integrated in the context of a civilization that also dialogues with its artistic and musical components, has all the characteristics to realize this formative process in its entirety, precisely because it is based on a communicative medium, the word, which allows, in a much more pregnant way than visual language, a true experience. As the German philosopher Ernst Bloch asserted, men always need an education in hope precisely so that they can face experiences that will "actively throw them into the new that is being established and to which they themselves belong": the word Erfahrung ("experience") indicates precisely a "setting out" that generates knowledge. There is in this a strong projectual component that is not satisfied with contingency and the status quo but aspires to change; it does not vague fanciful hypotheses in an indeterminate future but challenges the present by urging it to reveal what does not yet appear visible, its possible utopia, beyond the background noise of actuality. In literature, in art, in music, all this acquires the unmistakable imprint of human desire, immediately arousing recognition and a deep sense of belonging. Wrote Russian poet Osip Mandel'štam: "On the panes of eternity stretched out / my breath, my warmth. // On it was imprinted a drawing / ultimately indecipherable. // Let the sediment of the moment drip out / the dear drawing cannot be erased" (transl. Gianfranco Lauretano); and Mario Luzi: "Fly high, word, grow deep, / [...] / however, do not separate yourself / from me, do not arrive, / please, at that celestial appointment / alone, without the warmth of me / [...]." To truly understand the tradition means precisely to grasp this endiad of eternity and revelation of the moment, contemplation of the universal and sharing of individual feeling, of the warm embrace of humanitas. The Master's program proposed by the Institute of Italian Studies presents a completely unique peculiarity compared to the educational offerings of other universities, because it is based on a curriculum consisting of courses that, each year, gather around a specific theme: a thematic unity that becomes a stimulus and a concrete opportunity for interdisciplinarity. It intends to offer its students the acquisition of a mature right of citizenship in the domain of the word, which will enable them to question the present, consciously set out towards the future and, above all, to recognize their own singularity as persons.
